Around Metairie
Metairie isn’t a city. It is an unincorporated community in Jefferson Parish, and with 143,507 people in the 2020 census it is the largest community in the parish. It runs from the 17th Street Canal, its border with New Orleans, west to Kenner, and from Lake Pontchartrain south to the railroad tracks. River Ridge, Harahan, Elmwood and Jefferson are on the other side of those tracks.
The name is French for a small tenant farm. The first settlers built along Metairie Ridge, a natural levee left by an old branch of the Mississippi, and the homes put up off the ridge road in the 1920s are what people now call Old Metairie. Veterans Boulevard was laid out beside a drainage canal and grew into a commercial center, with Lakeside Shopping Center at 3301 Veterans Memorial Blvd. Lafreniere Park is at 3000 Downs Blvd, and the Jefferson Performing Arts Center is at 6400 Airline Dr.

Metairie is unincorporated, so there is no city hall to get a permit from. Building permits for Metairie homes go through Jefferson Parish Building Permits, the parish department that used to be called Inspection and Code Enforcement. Its East Bank office is at 1221 Elmwood Park Blvd, Suite 101, in Jefferson.
